Living within earthquakes and volcanoes in Japan
Heidi Soosalu
12th of September at 19:00 in the Domus Dorpatensis seminar room
FB event

It is no coincidence Japan is a hotspot for the biggest possible earthquakes and the most devastating volcanic eruptions. It’s all a part of the global puzzle, entwined and following known rules. The reality of living in Japan is to accept and cope with these natural occurrences. These cannot be avoided and prevention is difficult, but a number of research and extenuation methods have been successfully executed.

This presentation is about which quakes and eruptions take place in Japan and how the buildings are constructed to take minimal damage.

The presentation is in Estonian.

Horror in Japanese literature
Kairi Jets
22nd of September at 19:00 in the Domus Dorpatensis seminar room
FB event

Horror in Japanese literature in its clearer sense began during Edo period (1603-1868) when traders travelled more and printing came into being and the so-called light literature could come into being. The presentation talks about the folkloric origin of the Japanese horror literature, how it later developed and of some interesting present day authors.

Kairi Jets is earning her doctorate in World Literature in the University of Tartu and is researching horror literature in Japan and in Western areas. In 2012-2013 she was a transfer student in Tokyo Waseda University and in the spring of 2016 she gave a lecture in the University of Tartu called ‘Introduction into Japanese Literature’.

The presentation is in Estonian.
